Integrated Reefer News | Page 2 Looking to the future ONE places major order for Star Cool and Star Cool CA Born out of the legacy of three leading Japanese liner companies, Ocean Network Express (ONE) is currently one of the top global carriers in the containerised reefer market. As part of its expansion plans, ONE recently announced a significant order of 14,000 new refrigerated container units for its reefer business segment. Forming part of the order are 5,000 Star Cool Integrated Reefers, including 1,500 Star Cool CA units. These were chosen as the best available option to cater for the peak periods of the southern hemisphere fruit seasons. In a company press release, CEO Jeremy Nixon commented: “ONE has one of the largest and youngest reefer fleets in the world, equipped with the most advanced technologies designed to handle the global demand for perishable cargos. With this new investment, ONE will be able to further extend its market position while investing in the latest technologies to meet future customer demands.” Leading CA operator Adding to the current reefer equipment fleet, the new order will increase ONE’s total of Star Cool reefer containers to more than 20,000 units. At the same time, the order will increase ONE’s Star Cool CA capacity to over 3,000 units. This will position the company as one of the top four operators of integrated CA containers and a major global operator of Star Cool CA. The main reason for choosing Star Cool CA units was the strong and growing worldwide market for perishable goods. However, ONE’s commitment to environmental sustainability was a decisive factor in the procurement. With the lowest energy consumption level in their class, ONE recognised Star Cool containers as a means to actively support the company’s environmental and cost-related priorities. At the same time, by configuring some of its Star Cool units for early adoption trials of the low-GWP refrigerant R513A, ONE has demonstrated its firm commitment to environmental protection while actively embracing novel solutions to guard against rising operational costs. ‘‘This order enhances our efforts to support our customers’ increasing demand for controlled atmosphere transportation. - Andrew Ngan, General Manager – EQC & MnR at ONE Environmental and commercial benefits “This order enhances our efforts to support our customers’ increasing demand for controlled atmosphere transportation. It is also fully in line with the Group’s goal to better protect the environment through the early adoption of an alternative lower GWP refrigerant”, explained Andrew Ngan, General Manager – EQC & MnR at ONE. Compared with R134a units, R513A enables a 56% GWP reduction. Even though the initial order only specified a small number of units to be delivered factorycharged with the low-GWP refrigerant, the entire 5,000-unit order is fully optimised for simple conversion to R513A at any point in the future, as demand dictates. This is seen as a sound environmental and commercial investment in anticipation of future refrigerant phase-downs and increasing refrigerant prices. As a world-leading provider of reefer equipment, MCI has enjoyed a strong business relationship with the legacy partners of ONE. MCI now look forward to a long and prosperous cooperation with ONE in the future.
