You have had surgery of your knee or shoulder. In the following you can read more about your recovery and rehabilitation. Shoulder: The patches should be left on for 6-7 days providing they stay clean and dry. Bandages Your bandage/patches have to be clean and dry at all times. If there´s a leakage of blood during the first 24 hours after surgery your bandage/ patches will need a sterile change and you have to contact the nearest medical emergency service or your own doctor. After 24 hours you can change the patches yourself. You can have a shower after 24 hours leaving the patches on. You may shower without the patches once your wounds are no longer leaking fluid, but try not to soak or scrub your wounds. When you have had your stiches removed you should wait for 3 days before you take a swim in the sea or a swimmingpool. Removal of your stitches: At your own doctor after 10-14 days At our outpatient clinic (the day and time will appear on the appointment card) When to get medical advice: • A high temperature • Severe or increasing pain • Severe or increasing redness or swelling • Discoloured or foul-smelling discharge from your wounds These could be symptoms of a complication of surgery, such as an infection. Please contact our outpatient clinic A510. After opening hours contact the nearest medical emergency service. Rehabilitation after surgery Knee: You can remove the elastic bandage after 24 hours. If you have had open surgery the patches should be left on for 6-7 days. If you have had an arthroscopic operation you can change the patches whenever it´s needed after 24 hours. Knee: After surgery you are allowed to walk with full weight load on your leg as soon as you leave the recovery ward. In some cases you will need to use crutches and the nurses will assist you. 2
