PHYSICAL PENDULUM/ BESSEL PENDULUM 218100 The device consists of a knife edge pivot, a stainless steel rod with a series of lasercut holes, two steel weights and an aluminium weight, bolts and nuts. A detailed English manual with a summary of the necessary theory is included. Now backed by two lab manuals – search for the experiment number on our web site. Steiner’s theorem The graphs shows the experimental results for symmetrical weight positions: The measured moment of inertia as a function of the square of the distance between the centre of mass and the pivot. The parameter is distance from the pendulum centre to the weights. The results illustrate Steiner’s theorem I = IG + M · a 2 T he physical pendulum is used in the study of moments of inertia and motion of rigid bodies. Centre of gravity, pivot and moment of inertia can be varied in countless ways. For the calculations you get the opportunity of using Steiner’s theorem and a number of formulae for the moments of inertia of the various components of the pendulum. Lab: 135610-EN Physical pendulum. The Bessel pendulum is a so-called reversion pendulum and is used to determine the acceleration due to gravity. A reversion pendulum can be turned upside down – there is a pivot at each end. The pendulum is adjusted to make the periods identical for both pivots despite the different distances to the centre of mass. Lab: 135630-EN The Bessel pendulum – measuring g. 218100 Physical pendulum / Bessel pendulum Recommended accessories: The knife edge pivot may be used with normal stand material, but more accurate results are achieved by clamping the pivot to the edge of a steady table with a clamp. The period is best determined with data logging equipment – or a photogate with a counter – or a SpeedGate. 001510 200550 197550 197570 Clamp Electronic Counter Photocell Unit SpeedGate Frederiksen Scientific A/S Viaduktvej 35 .
