3 DTU HIGH TECH SUMMIT 2019 DTU High Tech Summit – digitization and sustainable development go hand in hand Digitization and sustainable development must go hand in hand. This applies to society at large and to DTU. That is why this year’s High Tech Summit focuses on digital development and sustainable solutions within climate, environment, and energy. As more and more things are connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) and equipped with Artificial intelligence (AI), we also see an increase in energy consumption, which we need to deal with. More than 20 billion units are expected to be connected to the IoT as soon as 2020 – this equals an increase of 30 per cent every year. Today, the IoT and the data centres make up ten per cent of the world’s electricity consumption and emit more than two per cent of man-made carbon emissions. Internet traffic thus emits as much carbon as the world’s total air traffic and will probably overtake it. For that reason, we need technological solutions that reduce energy consumption and increase energy efficiency and the use of green energy, while we simultaneously increase data performance and digitization. Because the digitization will not stop or slow down – on the contrary. The recommendations of the growth team for green energy and environmental technology, the Digitization Pact between the government, LGDK, and Danish Regions, and the future national centre for artificial intelligence are evidence that the digital development is accelerating. DTU collaborates with the industrial sector, governmental authorities, and other educational institutions in many fields that are of importance for the digital society of the future – including how we enhance the efficiency of our energy systems and reduce our carbon emissions. For example, by digi- tizing the electricity and district heating network and using big data, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and IoT solutions in the long term, we will be able to utilize green energy much better than we do today. The digitization also means that we can develop a more energy-efficient infrastructure around the towns and cities, where e.g. the heat in buildings is controlled by data from the weather forecast and thus saves energy. We also conduct research and collaborate with several parties on how to increase the efficiency of our communications infrastructure, to ensure that we can send large volumes of data through the IoT in the future while using still less energy. Energy and climate problems are global and thus also important in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Digitization is without doubt a part of the solution. This is why I believe that we, as one of the most digitized countries in the world, have a duty to take the lead and collaborate nationally and internationally on new solutions. Digitization can actually increase our competitiveness and growth, if we manage to be first with new, sustainable technology. It is therefore crucial that we meet across sectors, governmental authorities, students, startups, entrepreneurs, and many more – because only together do we innovate and create the digital solutions of the future. That is why I’m happy to say that we expect 6,000 visitors, 1,000 companies and organizations, and 300 start-ups at High Tech Summit– the largest university-based technology event in Scandinavia. And I’m very thankful for the support of our strategic partners, sponsors, and exhibitors, who – in partnership with us – will make every effort to create inspiring days of digitization.
