3 High Tech Summit 2018 High Tech Summit accelerates development of digital technology We are looking forward to continuing the success of last year’s summit. Already in its second year, the High Tech Summit has positioned itself as Denmark’s university-driven technology summit. This year, we are focusing on the major possibilities offered by digitization and robotics in the healthcare sector and in the food science and technology field. It is about using computing power to process huge volumes of data so that they are turned into useful knowledge and products that create value for people in their day-to-day lives. It is also about precision medicine, in which genetic engineering and big data open up new possibilities of customizing medicine to the individual patient. Since the 2017 summit, the digital agenda has changed. The Danish Government has allocated DKK 1 billion for a strategy for digital growth and a number of initiatives which – towards 2025 – can generate growth and increase prosperity. The strategy includes a public-private partnership – Digital Hub Denmark– where DTU will house a Pilot Hub for digital technologies. The Hub will include a digital platform that matches players – for example large enterprises that are facing a digital transformation – with entrepreneurs and small enterprises that can contribute with competence, knowledge, and talent. The activities in Digital Hub Denmark are supported at DTU with DTU Skylab, which – towards 2020 – will be extended to three times its current volume. The new DTU Skylab will house a “business lab”, in which enterprises can be at the cutting edge in handling significant technology and market changes. Another good initiative by the Danish Government is a Technology Pact anchored in four ministries which encourages enterprises, educational institutions, and other players to provide inspiration and develop competences and skills for the technological and digital jobs of tomorrow. In this connection, I – as President of DTU – can once again be pleased about the focus on the importance of innovation. The use of digital technologies is a challenge to enterprises in all industries. But there is good reason to focus intensely on this field. There is, in fact, an untapped automation potential amounting to DKK 66 billion in Danish industrial companies – according to a new analysis from the Danish Society of Engineers (IDA). Digitisation, robotics, and artificial intelligence can likewise contribute to solving important social problems. Examples of this are a reduction in consumption of the energy used in manufacturing industry, or the creation of more effective medicines and improved food safety. In this way, Denmark can contribute to meeting the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals to transform the world. If Denmark is to maintain its position as a digital front runner, there is a need constantly to stimulate the development through fruitful meetings between researchers, students, and entrepreneurs. It is about innovation. It is about meeting your future partners, regardless of whether you are a technology enterprise, student, researcher, politician, or startup. High Tech Summit 2018 is expected to attract more than 4,000 visitors, 700 enterprises, and over 250 startups. I would like to acknowledge the great support we receive from our strategic partners and the exhibitors for High Tech Summit 2018. Based on our mission to develop and create value using the natural sciences and technical sciences to benefit society, we at DTU will do our best to create an exciting High Tech Summit for everyone. We look forward to two inspiring days. Anders Overgaard Bjarklev, President of DTU. Purpose: The High Tech Summit publication puts the digital transformation into focus.
