4 While waiting for the baby to arrive Pregnancy can feel like a long nine months, and the wait for the big day can feel infinitely long for some. Fortunately, this gives you plenty of time to prepare for the birth and for baby’s arrival – but you should also remember to use the time to take care of yourself and ensure that you get a nice, calm start. Here, we provide a few specific tips and considerations when it comes to preparing for a brand-new life. The preparations that you make before your baby arrives will most likely include a number of purchases, particularly if you are expecting your first child. Everything does not necessarily have to be purchased in advance, but there are some basic things that will make life with your new baby easier – a baby bed and mattress, a duvet, baby sheets, soft cloth muslins, baby clothes, a changing mat, baby oil, a baby blanket/ wrap, a car seat (if your baby is being brought home by car), as well as a pram so that you can get around. These items will provide you with an excellent foundation, but you may also want to consider a changing unit that provides a better working position as well as a nursing pillow that can facilitate breastfeeding. Perhaps you could also use a pregnancy pillow and a hospital bag, or perhaps you want to play a melody for your unborn baby inside the womb that it will then recognise after it is born. If this is the case, a musical mobile might be a nice thing to invest in. For many, there is also something special about buying their baby’s first rattle or teddy bear to give to their baby soon after they are born. BABY CAVE NO. 2 – A SAFE AND SECURE ENVIRONMENT, WITH ROOM TO GROW IN For many, making their home ready for a baby is also about decorating the nursery – baby cave no. 2. Depending on how your home is decorated, the ‘nursery’ could also just be a corner in the bedroom or living room. The baby does not need an actual room of its own at first. However, for most people, it is convenient for them to have their baby’s things gathered in one place, rather than throughout the home. Which is why the design of the nursery – wherever it may be – can be an important part of preparing for the baby’s arrival. And it’s also a lot of fun. Because even though the room may not be used that much in the beginning, the mental preparation can be important, and the process of decorating the nursery can help to make being a parent, perhaps for the first time, more concrete. Maybe you already know your baby’s gender. Maybe not? No matter what your baby’s gender, there are many options in terms of style, functionality and decor. TIP 1: Support and comfort during the day and at night. Relieve the pregnant belly or pelvis with pillows, or as shown here, with an elongated knitted pillow, ‘Sleepy Croc’, which can easily be used as a pregnancy pillow.
