Executive summary Looking back on year 2020, covid-19 turned the whole world upside down. At Steno Diabetes Center Odense, and other hospital units across the country, 2020 left a mark on our work routines, as administrative staff worked from home, and clinical staff – the un- crowned heroes without a cape - in record time implemented virtual outpatient appoint- ments or were seconded to the covid-19 section Even though 2020, in many ways, has been a diffi- cult year, it has provided us with new insights and forced us to rethink the way we work, communicate and collaborate, as well as it has given rise to a sense of community and workplace cohesion – even when working conditions change with short notice and are subject to new and unforeseen challenges. On the social front, 2020 was the year that replaced small talk around the coffee machine, joint breakfast on Fridays, and networking activities with digital knowledge sharing. Like never before, virtual communication tools have been vital to keeping co-workers and collaborators up-to-date, in a time where a lockdown of society and social distancing have minimized our opportuni- ty to meet face to face. The annual conference ‘Diabetes Day of Southern Denmark’ (Syddansk Diabetesdag), with around 250 participants, was reorganized as a virtual event, and the competency development area experienced a minor setback during the spring, due to cancellation of several activities, but came back strong in the fall with new digital solutions and an intensified focus on e-learning. Despite the covid-19 situation, we have, all in all, achieved many milestones in 2020. To name just a few, we have for the first time studied the well-be- ing and satisfaction among diabetes patients in the Region of Southern Denmark, which a.o. raised the question whether or not diabetes distress ought to become part of the standard treatment. One of our numerous supplementary treatment initiatives, the ‘same-day-complication-screening’, reached no less than 10.000 eye photos through the related eye screening. The former diabetes handbook was released as a smartphone app named ‘Alt om Diabetes’ (all about diabetes) targeted health care professionals in the primary sector. The first 16 initiatives of the user involvement strategy have really managed to incorporate user involvement in the work and culture of our entire organization. Furthermore, the up-start evaluation process and related employee involvement have been essential to establishing a shared direction and understanding of Steno Diabetes Center Odense (SDCO)’s overall objectives. In line with that, our hallmark strategy entitled ‘The best life with type 2 diabetes – with the user as our driving force’ has fallen into place, and will from now on be setting the stage for the work in SDCO, espe- cially within the areas of research and cross-sectoral collaboration. 4
