Instruction in PEP-mask/device - adults This is how you use the PEP mask/device 1. Sit down, preferably at a table, with your elbows resting on the table. 2. Close your lips tightly around the mouthpiece/hold the mask tight to your mouth and nose. 3. Breathe in and out times through the PEP mask/device. Inhale a little deeper than usual and exhale a little more actively than usual, without emptying the lungs completely. 4. Remove the mask/device. Now take a deep breath and huff/exhale forcefully and fast, in one go, with your mouth wide open. Repeat 2-3 times and then cough up any mucus. Repeat points 2-4 until there is no more mucus in the airways. 5. Use the PEP mask/device times a day, or anytime you believe there might be mucus in the airways. Instruction in PEP-mask/device - adults Hygiene - keep the PEP mask/device clean! While you are in the hospital The PEP mask/device is stored in a cardboard tray at your bedside table. It may not be stored in a plastic bag. PEP mask/device is replaced every 7 days or when it is visibly dirty. The physiotherapist writes on the PEP mask/ device when you received it. You have to remember yourself that it has to be replaced after 7 days. Tell the physiotherapist or nursing staff that you need a new one. You may use the PEP mask/device at home if you have been discharged within 7 days of receiving the PEP mask/device. This hygiene procedure only applies while you are in the hospital. After you are discharged The PEP mask/device cannot be washed in the dishwasher. Wash the PEP mask/device in soapy water, rinse in clean water and allow to air dry. Be careful to reassemble the PEP mask/device correctly after it has been disassembled. You can buy a new one from the pharmacy if cannot clean your PEP mask/device properly or if it looks worn and needs replacing.
