Next up is machine learning, quantum computing, virtual and augmented reality, etc.Artificial intelligence is probably the biggest technological revolution of modern times and will be mixed and matched with robot and drone technology that are already entering the healthcare system. Innovation and development require both technological insight and knowhow. You have to know about and understand how to apply the technology in order to make the most of it. This gives you leverage – or power, if you like – to improve service delivery, introduce new treatments, relieve staff, etc. But power must be balanced, and innovation must adhere to ethical, moral, and democratic rules and regulations, thereby ensuring that innovation is undertaken in a humanistic and socially equal symbiosis with operational tasks and patient and staff considerations. It is essential to know and understand the ins and outs of managing and planning innovation. It is vital that we – as individuals, as healthcare professionals, and as an organisation – take a structured approach to the phenomenon of innovation. Strategic innovation calls for an overarching innovation strategy, the right skills, passionate staff, cross-disciplinary collaboration, citizen and patient involvement, and the allocation of the resources needed to fulfil our objectives and realise our visions and aspirations. It calls for innovationcentric leadership and an innovation-centric organisational culture. Leading and driving innovation is leadership in a neural network of integrated nodes of a hitherto unseen nature in the healthcare sector. Quite possibly invisible to many – not least managers. That is the background for this book. Our reason for writing this book is the slow progress – in fact at times the complete standstill – in the development of the Danish healthcare sector due to an initial focus on enhancing productivity, eventually shifting towards quality and process improvement.
