NEWS Integrated Reefer 3rd quarter 2019 Having the environment drive value By Søren Leth Johannsen, Chief Commercial Officer Dear Reader, Welcome to the Q3 edition of our Integrated Reefer News, which I hope will again capture your interest. In this edition, we provide you with an update on refrigerants and the current and upcoming solutions that Star Cool is investing in to ensure your peace of mind. It is evident that the cost of the most commonly used refrigerant, R134a, will continue increasing across the globe. The price increase is stronger in some regions than in others, but the development is unstoppable. As an example, the price of R134a in Norway has now exceeded that of R513A (with 56% lower GWP). In South Korea, the price of R134a has surged by 20% since January. Star Cool is already prepared for R513A, but we are not stopping there. Still based on the same Star Cool platform, we have begun the conformity process for a triple refrigerant concept, with the ability to operate on R134a or R513A as well as the ultra-low GWP refrigerant R1234yf which has already been widely adopted by the automotive industry for air conditioning systems. There is no doubt that 2019 is another challenging year. The fierce pressure on freight rates, continuing new orders and deliveries for the very large container vessels, the China/US trade war, and the ever-stricter legislation that continues to be imposed, are all perpetuating difficult market conditions in the container shipping sector. The increasing operating costs imposed by the aforementioned refrigerant is of course marginal compared to the impact of the IMO 2020 low-sulphur fuel regulation, resulting in energy costs going up by an estimated 40-45%. In an already highly competitive container freight market, it is more important than ever that container lines successfully manage to transfer increased fuel costs to their shippers. Just as vital, is to ensure maximum energy efficiency onboard the vessels as a further means to reduce costs. This is where advanced technology has a direct positive impact, such as our highly energy-efficient Star Cool reefer. ZIM Integrated Shipping Services At the end of May, we were proud to see ZIM Integrated Shipping Services announcing their first Star Cool order. We look forward to supporting ZIM in their reefer operations with the most energy-efficient reefer and future-proof refrigeration solution in the industry. The Star Cool reefers will be installed with ZIM’s own monitoring technologies to ensure that their reefer container transportation is as secure, reliable and efficient as possible. Dan Bartal, Container Fleet Manager at ZIM Integrated Shipping said: “We are expanding our fleet of ZIMonitor containers to accommodate our customers’ growing demand for our exclusive ZIMonitor service, and we are sure MCI’s highly advanced and energy-efficient Star Cool Integrated reefers will be a great addition to our equipment fleet.” Star Cool technology has a strong track record with over 300,000 units in operation, spread across more than 40 container lines, leasing companies and multinational fruit companies around the globe. Today, more and more customers are turning to the technology not only for its proven performance and reliability, but also to help meet their increasing sustainability objectives. I hope you enjoy this edition of Integrated Reefer News.
