NEWS Integrated Reefer 1st quarter 2019 Looking forward with confidence By Søren Leth Johannsen, Chief Commercial Officer As we enter 2019, MCI can see some encouraging signs for the year ahead. Now that the final figures for 2018 are evident, we can report an estimated total market production of 140,000 reefer units. This figure reflects the positive development in the global reefer transportation market and represents a 22% growth in total market production over 2017. Overall, 2018 was a great year for MCI that saw us supplying a wide range of container lines, fruit multinational and leasing companies. On the basis of our share of the market as a whole, Star Cool proved a strong performer: every third reefer entering the market was branded Star Cool. Our customer support and service offering played a key role in this success. Strategic realignment 2018 was also the first year in which MCI produced more Star Cool machines than reefer boxes and we have invested in increasing our capacity to produce the Star Cool picture frame unit. Since the market for dry containers has been challenged and has been under enormous pressure for some time, the decision to exit the dry container business has been taken. From now on, we will focus exclusively on reefer technology and dedicate all our resources to the cold chain business. We are currently in the process of significantly expanding the teams working within MCI on refrigeration, postharvest technology and digitalisation. Digital innovations 2018 also saw the announcement of Sekstant® Global Guidance, MCI’s reefer digitalisation and connectivity solution. Sekstant®, the first OEM digitalisation ecosystem, will be fully rolled out and implemented this year and we are busy finalising the specific services we will offer in close cooperation with our customers. Sekstant® represents a major leap forward for MCI and our value chain. The system uses data for product optimisation, operational improvements in the transport chain and to provide new services. These services are enabled by the connected reefer and the interaction between the equipment itself, the OEM and the operator. Operators are already beginning to explore the benefits of connected reefers, both internally and with their customers. Sekstant® will support both these valueadding activities simultaneously. The world of reefers is changing fast with new technology. Alongside Sekstant®, we are working on developing several other digital innovations. These include the Star Cool Service app, which supports daily operations, and the MCI Box Inspection app. Both services are already available and we will continue to refine them in the coming year. To complement the operational benefits of digitalisation, Star Cool has also launched an e-learning programme to raise expertise in the field to the next level. You can read more about this in the following pages, along with our update on remanufactured spare parts and the story about the major Japanese container line ONE’s reefer equipment priorities in 2018. We look forward to building on last year’s success and to continuing the excellent cooperation with our many global customers in 2019.
