THE ENERGY ENGINEER, WHO | 223 REDUCES GAS CONSUMPTION AND CO2 EMMISSIONS Everyone talks about sus- tainable industrial production. GEA is a big company and has the capacity to actually do something about it, says Riccardo Bergamini, who reduces production facilities’ energy consumption with heat recovery and heat pumps. “It’s about reducing energy consumption in industral pro- cesses that use large amounts of heat. We do it with heat recovery and heat pumps, and actually make history here, because we are inte- grating cutting edge heat pumps into processes, where they have never been used before.’ According to Riccardo, it is a game changer in the process industry. “I am an energy expert in the R&D department in GEA, and because GEA is such a big company, it gives me great opportunity to work with and actually achieve our goals. GEA has experience in a large part of the industrial processes involved. We have so much expertise internally that it’s possible to become a leader in the field.’ “The solution for reduction of gas consumption and CO2 emission costs more than conventional solutions, which is why it previously didn’t have as much interest. However, in the past few years, many manufacturing companies, e.g. the big dairy companies have changed their views on sustainability, which has become much more important now. These companies are now willing to accept a return on investment of more than five years, where before it was two years at most. This presents some exciting opportunities for my colleagues and me in the R&D department. It is exciting to be part of a paradigm shift in the industry, where we are working towards full electrification and reducing CO2 emissions to zero, working closely together with experts around GEA globally. In Denmark, we are specialists in drying processes, and our colleagues in e.g. The Netherlands are experts in heat pumps. It is a great advantage that we have almost all the neces- sary skills in-house. It makes it much easier to share knowledge and develop sustainable solutions that work better and make a difference for the customer and the environment.’ look for more information at: GEA.com/en/careers
