Standards Products and solutions designed to provide prote‑ ction from blasts are tested according to European Norm EN 13123‑1 (Shock Tube) and EN 13123-2 (Outdoor) with the additional designation “splinter” (S) for units/elements that are not protected from splintering and fragmentation, and “no splinter” (NS) for units/elements that are protected from splintering and fragmentation. Tests are conducted on individual building parts, like a window or door, as well as on complete elements, such as facade segments. EN 13123-1 Shock Tube Primarily tests resistance to petrochemical explosions (low-velocity explosions of approx. 200 ms or more). The test is conducted using powerful blast pressure (created by releasing air through a tube, typically 20 meters long and 1 meter in diameter initially, and up to 3 meters), with the element attached to the end of the tube. The pressure increases up to 2 bar. It is not possible to test elements larger than 100 x 90 cm using this testing method. This test utilizes only overpressure during the ensuing underpressure as in EN 13123-2. EN 13541 Shock Tube (Glass) This standard pertains to glass that is shock tube- tested for explosion resistance. The levels are designated EP1 – EP4 followed by either S or NS. 13123-2 (Outdoor) A typical test of resistance to explosive material (high-velocity blasts between 5 and 20 ms). The test is conducted outdoors in a controlled area. The weight and type of the explosive material as well as the distance to the object determine the classification of the unit. This standard does not take into consideration larger volumes of explosive materials and longer distances. This is one of the reasons why actual requirements are often defined based on a risk assessment. 3
