In R&D the trick is to combine my professional skills with those of my colleagues in a way that bring a different skill set into play. I can’t just have it my way. We have to find the best possible compromise and that takes dialogue and collaboration. Let‘s say that the product vision is an elegant headset with best in class audio. The most straightforward solution would be to choose some big speakers to provide the good sound we are looking for. Yet, big speakers don’t appear especially elegant. In dialogue with my colleagues we will look to find a solution with smaller speakers with better acoustic integration and optimized software. Then the next challenges appear: The elegant design might require a complex construction that cannot be assembled in Manufacturing Engineering. The mechanical solution may also require the use of metal to create elegance and robustness but it will ruin the antenna design in the hardware. And so on. The point is, when you start developing something new, you never know what happens. One thing I have learnt, is that at some point we will be hit by something we never anticipated from the beginning. Getting through this can be tough, but when everything comes together and you hold the final product in your hands, it’s simply magical.
