EEG - Information for English speaking patients. Patientinformation Vælg farve EEG is an abbreviation for Electro- EncephaloGraphy What is the purpose of the examination? To examine the (bio)electrical activity of the brain with simultaneous video-recording. Medication: If you are on any medication you should take it as usual. Is there any preparation before the examination? You must have clean, newly washed dry hair with no hairproducts. You may eat and drink as usual. How long does the examination take? Approximately one hour. What takes place during the examination? You lay down throughout and it is a painless examination. Small metal plates (electrodes) are placed on your scalp using a gel. The electrodes are connected to a computer, which can read the electrical activity of the brain. It is important that you can keep still during the examination. You are welcome to sleep during part of the examination. Hyperventilation: During a short period you will be asked to take deep breaths and later a Photic stimulation will be applied, i.e. a strong light flickers in front of you with different frequencies and you will be asked to open and shut your eyes. These procedures carry a minimal risk of provoking epileptic symptoms (and can have consequences, e.g. for your driving license) and are optional. But we recommend you to participate. Precautionary measures after the examination: Due to the electrode gel your hair will be greasy afterwards, but it is easily washed out . How do I get the examination results? The doctor or department that referred you to the examination will inform you of the result. We archive the examination as part of your medical record at OUH, however the video part only if relevant. Contact: If you have any further questions, feel free to contact the department by phone 6541 2457, daily telephone hours at 8:00 to 15:00.
