You must also do the exercises that the physiotherapist instructs you to do, and be physically active to the extent that you can. The effect of PEP treatment When you breathe through the PEP mask/device, the pressure in the lungs increases. This way you breathe deeper, the air is forced out more easily into the small airways and any mucus is loosened. The PEP treatment works by: • Preventing and removing small airway closures. • Loosening mucus so that it becomes easier to • cough it up and in this way keeping the airways free of mucus. • Allowing calm and deep breathing. Reducing the feeling of shortness of breath. Be as physically active as possible! PEP treatment is part of your respiratory system treatment. In addition to using the PEP mask/device, the physiotherapist will also ask you to be as active as possible. It all contributes to: • Helping you breathe • Keeping a good circulation • Ensuring that you do not lose too much muscle strength and function while you are in hospital. Overview of airways The inhaled air comes through the trachea and into the lungs. The large airways are highlighted in the picture and at the end of the large airways; you can see the small airways. The PEP mask/device targets to affect the small airways. Examples on how to be physical: • Change frequently your position in bed. • Sit up - preferably in a chair. • Go for a walk - even if it is just around the bed. • Move your arms above the head and out to the sides -it additionally stimulates breathing. Ask for help if you find it difficult. Good to know It is easier to breathe while sitting or standing up than lying down. It is important to take deep breaths.
