Preface This PhD thesis is based on studies conducted while working part time clinically at the Emergency Department Regional Hospital Horsens and later at the Emergency Department Aarhus University Hospital. As a PhD fellow I was part time employed by the Department for Research and Development at the Prehospital Emergency Medical Services, Central Denmark Region. I want to thank The Danish Ministry of Health and the Danish Ministry of Interior, the Prehospital Emergency Medical Services Central Denmark Region, Research Center for Emergency Medicine Aarhus, Central Denmark Region, and The KEE foundation who funded the work. First of all I want to thank the former head of the Emergency Department at Regional Hospital Horsens, Ove Bertin Gaardboe for believing in me and giving me the chance to do this research. I also want to thank my supervisors Hans Kirkegaard, Ingunn S. Riddervold, Erika F. Christensen and Thorbjørn Grøfte for guidance and constructive criticism. Ingunn, thank you for always caring. I would also like to express my gratitude to data manager at Regional Hospital Horsens Lise Viskum Hansen for always being helpful and managing data otherwise unmanageable to me. I also owe Iben Duvald Pedersen at Interdisciplinary Center for Organizational Architecture at Aarhus University my gratitude for providing anthropological assistance in interviews and surveys. I thank Jørgen Langberg Gustafsson at the Prehospital Emergency Medical Services for providing and supporting the geographical information system web application we used in one of the studies. The staff at the Emergency Department at Regional Hospital Horsens and ambulance crews at Response A/S and Falck A/S have also earned my thanks for making the execution of the studies possible and for participating in surveys and interviews. Morten Thingemann Bøtker, Kristian Friesgaard, Sophie-Charlott Seidenfaden and Kristine Krushave Lehm, my dear colleagues and friends at the Department of Research and Development - thank you for your help, and most importantly for being you, it’s been a true pleasure. I also want to thank my other colleagues at the 2nd floor at the Prehospital Emergency Medical Services for always being friendly and helpful, and for providing inspiring and funny lunch- and coffee breaks. Finally, I want to thank my family for being there, for laughing at and bearing over with me! 3
