Integrated reefer NEWS 1st quarter 2016 Gearing up For the Future By Soren Leth Johannsen, Chief Commercial Officer The year 2015 saw many new events and positive changes for MCI. Our new reefer production site in Chile went into operation for largescale production, enabling shipping lines and leasing companies to take advantage of being able to access world-class reefer equipment on both sides of the globe. The concept quickly led to orders, new customers and most importantly repeat orders. Among these was Chiquita. This world-famous fruit multinational ordered Star Cool Integrated reefers to ensure that their fleet was well equipped for the future. Søren Toft, Chief Operating Officer of Maersk Line, paid tribute to the strategic importance of MCI as supplier of Star Cool reefer containers from Chile. The race for lower operating costs among shipping companies is never ending and Star Cool has once again achieved the next great leap in power reduction. The StarConomy software option solves the riddle of hidden energy consumption reduction combined with high produce care. You can read more about this and our cooperation with Dole on this project in the following pages. A large proportion of orders received in 2015 included the Star Cool CA system. Since the concept was launched in 2008, it is now clear that the accumulated experience and market integration of this modern “box and unit” complete reefer CA system is proving its worth. Although most Star Cool reefers were delivered as CA from our factories, we saw a growing number of CA systems in 2015 being upgraded to in-fleet Star Cool Integrated CA-ready reefers at depots to cater for new business opportunities. With eight years of proven experience in CA shipments of bananas, avocados, mangos and other high-respiring commodities, Star Cool CA is now ready to enter the low-respiring fruit segment. By listening to our customers, Star Cool recognized the need to come up with a robust CA system for low-respiring fruits like blueberries, lychees and table grapes. From early conversations with Star Cool CA users, it became clear that shipping lines wanted to have full control of these highly perishable shipments without having a middleman in between. Up to now, shipping lines have had to lease the CA application from third-party providers who install the equipment and arrange gas injection. This adds an extra layer of complexity and cost to the process. Even more importantly, the old model prevents shipping lines from defining their own network and pricing strategies. Having full control of the process, from the first sales call to eventual analysis of logged data upon arrival, is an important parameter for shipping lines serious about the reefer business. These aspects frame a process that includes dealing direct with the exporter, preparing the load for export and being able to monitor shipments en route. All it takes for a shipping line to be able to use Star Cool CA for handling low-respiring fruit is a simple software upgrade. Cargo of this kind only require initial gas injection to create the atmosphere. Once the gas injection has been completed, the Star Cool CA takes over and controls the atmosphere with the same accuracy as it does for highrespiring fruit. I wish you fruitful reading!
