Integrated reefer NEWS 2nd quarter 2016 Sustainability supporting competitiveness By Soren Leth Johannsen, Chief Commercial Officer We work with sustainability in four key areas: 1) technological innovation to both answer our customers’ needs and promote environmental stewardship; 2) ethical business practices; 3) creating a safe and sustainable working environment, and 4) how we engage with the communities in which we operate. To give a formal context to our focus on Sustainability, we are now publishing a magazine called “Sustainability Insights”. It will be published on our website soon and explores the ways in which MCI addresses each of these four areas. The first issue includes a feature article on the crucial role that social responsibility and partnership with the local community played in the development of our new factory in San Antonio (Chile). Our aim for Sustainability Insights is to kick-start a conversation about what it means to be a responsible producer of reefer containers, refrigeration units and dry containers. Your feedback is welcome and is essential in helping us to understand how we can further improve our performance. Please send your thoughts or ideas to CSR@mcicontainers.com Transporting reefer cargo as energy and cost-efficiently as possible is vital in today’s competitive shipping environment. For our industry, this is far more of an opportunity than it is a hindrance. Rather than working against the interests of the industry, environmental progress should be directly linked to cutting costs. Besides reducing the industry’s carbon footprint, lower CO2 emissions mean lower energy bills, which will make all of us more profitable. Less energy than a hair dryer or a vacuum cleaner Our product development strategy of creating the lowest Total Cost of Ownership has driven MCI to achieve a new and unprecedented level of energy efficiency. With cargo care as its first priority, the successful launch of the StarConomy software for Star Cool has proved that commercial and environmental interests really do go hand-in-hand. The value of this reinvented use of the well-known Star Cool platform was clearly demonstrated in a recent series of live tests carried out in cooperation with Seatrade. During the trials, bananas were successfully transported in Star Cool Integrated containers from Ecuador to Hamburg using less than 1 kW on average over the Atlantic. This is quite revolutionary. Compared to the equipment available back when Star Cool was introduced 10 years ago, this represents an improvement factor of at least 5-10. In terms of energy consumption, that’s less than a hair dryer – or a vacuum cleaner uses. More than that, this level of reefer energy efficiency is probably a world first. In this latest issue of our magazine, you can also discover what happened when a team of leading fruit experts visited MCI in Chile, how a depot cuts its power bill by 50% and a bit unusual for our magazine, an interior coverage about Seatrade using a “slightly” modified Star Cool Integrated reefer as meeting room in their new office.
