To do this, the cargo temperature must be maintained, but a reduction in the oxygen level has the effect of further reducing the O2 respiration of the produce. The respiration will also produce elevated levels of carbon dioxide which can be detrimental to cargo if allowed to increase above the desired threshold. CO2 By sealing the container with the CA curtain and controlling the atmosphere, it is possible to extend the postharvest life of respiring fruit & vegetables, allowing more distant markets to be reached. The extremely air tight Star Cool Integrated reefer container provides a complete and validated foundation for successful CA shipments. Membrane The membrane allows CO2 to pass from the atmosphere surrounding the cargo to the outside. Vacuum pump The vacuum pump creates a pressure difference across the membrane, and exhausts CO2 to the outside of the container. Sensors The O2 and CO2 sensors constantly monitor the inside atmosphere and allow the controller to accurately regulate O2 above, and CO2 below the setpoint. Fresh air intake If the cargo respiration lowers the O2 level below the setpoint, the fresh air intake opens to allow ambient air to regulate the atmosphere inside the container.
