We do this because of our responsibility for customers, employees and the society and because it makes economic sense. We believe that the best way to lift our responsibility is to systematically handle the environmental challenges in the day-to-day operations. In 2003 the following issues have been in focus. DSB’s environmental work Looking after the environment is a continuous challenge for DSB – a task that we best fulfil by systematically handling environmental issues in day-to-day operations. DSB has formulated a general environmental policy and developed a number of tools to facilitate the environmental work. Moreover, we have developed policies for ’green’ purchasing and soil pollution. DSB’s environmental policy DSB aims to develop the railways’ advantage as an environmentalfriendly form of transport. Consequently, DSB will actively contribute to the reduction of the transport sector’s environmental impact per kilometre travelled by passengers. This will be achieved by supplying competitive transport with a low environmental impact. We will ensure that all activities planned and executed by DSB are environmentally sound. The Environmental strategy 2007 The Environmental strategy 2007 describes the systematically environmental work for the period 2004-2007. The ambition is that DSB shall act as a responsible operator and minimise the environmental risks. We want to improve the effect of our efforts and create visible results. This among others involves with the development of DSB’s first environmental policy and action plan. The following effects remain the most important. • • • • • • Energy consumption Air pollution from train operations Noise pollution from train operations Soil pollution from the past and the risk of diesel waste Handling of waste Handling of chemicals • • • • New engines for our InterCity trains. In 2003 we have tested engines that fulfil the EURO III standard for emissions. The test is promising and we expect a final decision early 2004. EURO III engines will have a major effect on the emission of particles particularly but also on other kind of emissions. We have taken 19 additional new S-trains in use. We assume that this is the main reason for the decrease in noise complains on the Suburban tracks. We continually try to reduce the environmental impact from our buildings. This means saving of electricity, heat and water and improved handling of waste. We have renewed our environmental strategy with activity plans for the following 4 years. The main purpose being to reduce the environmental risks and maximise the effects of our effort. Environmental goals in 2007 Our main goal is to reduce the environmental impact from air pollution by 30 % pr. passenger kilometre from 2002 to 2007. Environmental impact from air pollution includes train operation and other operations. Keld Sengeløv Managing Director • • In addition we have the following goals • • Follow-up on environmental goals is integrated in DSB’s general goal and result management Strengthen the co-operation across DSB and benefit from individual development and knowledge Communicate our knowledge and results to all of the organisation Strengthen the society’s view on DSB as a responsible operator. • • • • • Focus objectives in the the environmental strategy 2007 The biggest effects on the environment caused by DSB were identified by systematic analyses in connection Energy consumption. No rise in the consumption compared with 2002 for other operations than train operations even though restaurants and station shops now are part of DSB. Noise.
