ThE CoursE natural gas makes the journey reliable natural gas is in demand, available and can be stored – and far less Co2 is emitted from the burning of natural gas compared to coal and oil. natural gas is therefore crucial to obtain a reliable and more climatefriendly energy supply to power stations, industry and consumers for many years to come. this is an aspect we deal with in dong energy. through a targeted investment plan, we have secured a significant ongoing production of natural gas, and we complement our own production with long-term supply contracts with external suppliers. With the 85/15 strategy we take a big step today, 85 percent of dong energy’s heat and power is produced by fossil fuels – mainly coal. now we have set ourselves a goal: over the next 30 years we will reduce Co2 emissions per produced kwh to 15 percent of current levels. we handle the greatest reduction first. within the next 10 years we will halve Co2 emissions per kwh produced. Moving Energy Forward alone, dong energy cannot ensure that the global energy supply undergoes the necessary change in the years ahead. we know that. we hope we can help show the way. we do know where dong energy is headed – we have defined the course and the goal for our own journey – and the journey has begun. we call it Moving energy Forward. Less coal in order to reduce Co2 emissions, we have decided to suspend the production at 25 percent of our coal-fired power station capacity. at the same time we have stopped developing new coal fired power stations and we plan to convert some of the remaining coalfired power station units for biomass. More wind nature has given us ample wind resources. today, dong energy is a market leader in the development and construction of offshore wind farms. we will strengthen this position. DOng energy procures, produces, distributes, trades and sells energy to wholesale customers and end-users. through own production, partnerships and long-term agreements with other energy producers, we have ensured our customers a reliable supply of oil, natural gas, heat and power for years to come. Three paths lead to reliable energy without Co2 Our 85/15 strategy helps us navigate to ensure that just within 10 years we will halve the emission of cO2 per kWh produced in our heat and power production. We build more and more wind turbines, and by also ensuring the deliveries of natural gas many years ahead, we can supply reliable – and more climate friendly – energy to the power stations and to our customers. In addition, innovation is essential. therefore, DOng energy is involved in many exciting development projects and partnerships in wind power, in incineration of biomass, in the production of 2nd generation bioethanol, and in flexible consumption patterns. Co2 neutral biomass helps us on track For many years, our power stations have primarily used coal as fuel, but in recent years we have begun using Co2 neutral fuels such as straw and wood pellets. actually, dong energy is among the best in the world when it comes to the use of biomass in the heat and power production, and we will increase the utilisation of biomass significantly over the coming years. improving the efficiency – wind, however, is not a reliable energy source wind power plays an important role in our journey towards our vision, and we have more than 15 years experience in the design, building and operation of offshore wind farms. we are now using this expertise to industrialise the construction of our future offshore wind farms. thus, we can further increase the cost effectiveness of the projects. However, wind is not a reliable energy source. at present and for many years Fossil fuels are not all alike Fossil fuels are not all alike, and we will benefit from their various properties in our heat and power production. since natural gas emits far less Co2 per kwh produced, we will continue replacing more and more coal with natural gas. Here too our investment plan is ready. in norway, great Britain and Holland, dong energy is constructing power stations solely fuelled by natural gas. 9
<a10:updated>2011-02-10T22:31:41+01:00</a10:updated>

DONG ENERGY Page 10

leads tHe way The energy system turned upside down to protect the climate we must reduce the use of fossil fuels in the energy supply. that is a fact. But as we gradually say goodbye to fossil fuels in the global energy production, we also say goodbye to a flexible source of energy which enables the energy supply to be adjusted according to demand. with renewable energy sources such as wind, water and the sun, it is different. until an effective storage of renewable energy is possible, the production from renewable energy sources will depend on weather and season – not only on demand. InnOvatIOn Flexible energy consumption Heavy investment in renewable energy sources is still required, while at the same time efforts must be made to integrate renewable energy into the energy system. dong energy works hard on both. the more renewable energy integrated into the energy system, the greater the risk of imbalance between production and consumption. if the consumption is further adapted to the energy production, we will be able to exploit the renewable energy better. one of dong energy’s focus areas is to adjust the power consumption to meet the energy production from wind turbines. therefore, we work targeted to develop an intelligent power grid. FLExibLE ConsuMPtion Power cannot yet be stored in sufficient quantities – it has to be used when it is produced. wind power can be utilised even better if we begin adapting the power consumption to the wind power generation. this is where electric cars come in, since a car battery can be charged when there is surplus wind power – for example at night. in cooperation with Better Place denmark we are working to create a framework for electric cars in denmark. bioMAss dong energy is among the best in the world within utilisation of straw as fuel in the heat and power production. we are working to increase the share of biomass in our power stations, and with partners we are active in renescience. renescience is a development project in which biological waste is pre-treated with enzymes that liquefy the waste before it is converted into synthetic gas or biofuel. we are convinced that the project has fine perspectives. 11
<a10:updated>2011-02-10T22:31:41+01:00</a10:updated>

DONG ENERGY Page 12

Knowledge ensurIng the busIness In future Active in all parts of the energy value chain dong energy is active in all parts of the energy value chain – from exploration and production of oil and natural gas in the underground; production of heat and power; purchase and sale of energy on the european energy exchanges; to the sale and distribution of natural gas and electricity to our customers. One method is to use seismic sound waves, which reveal possible occurrences of oil and natural gas several kilometres below the seabed. exploration & production has extracted oil and natural gas in the north sea for several years and over time we have obtained and analysed large volumes of seismic data. as the technological development proceeds, new seismic technologies provide us with more detailed results than previously. for example, with new silencing technologies it is now possible to remove unnecessary noise which would otherwise lead to misinterpretation of seismic data. by looking with new eyes at improved versions of existing data material, we will more easily identify hidden deposits of oil or natural gas, and we therefore ensure improved utilisation of existing wells before we leave them. sales & DIstrIbutIOn 17
<a10:updated>2011-02-10T22:31:41+01:00</a10:updated>

DONG ENERGY Page 18

generatIOn MoDErn heat anD pOWer prODuctIOn is MuLTiDiMEnsionAL generation is responsible for DOng energy’s production of heat and power. the production takes place at a number of thermal power stations in Denmark and is also generated by renewable energy sources primarily in Denmark, in great britain, sweden and poland. generation is one of the world’s most experienced companies within the design, construction and operation of offshore wind farms. Case 2 EnErgy TrADing AT ThE righT TiME and at tHe rigHt PriCe energy Markets helps ensuring that energy is always traded at the best price and at the best time. this optimises the energy portfolio on the short term and on the long term and adds value to our wholesale customers as well as to us. our experienced traders daily monitor changes in the energy prices on the european energy exchanges in order to buy and sell electricity, natural gas, coal, oil, Co2 quotas and Co2 credits at the right time. the traders therefore continually analyse factors that could affect our wholesale customers and dong energy in order to handle risk management and to optimise and balance the energy portfolio. energy Markets has an overall view of dong energy’s entire energy portfolio – with the broad range of products. this allows us to make quick decisions and act at the best possible time. 24
<a10:updated>2011-02-10T22:31:41+01:00</a10:updated>

DONG ENERGY Page 25

explOratIOn & prODuctIOn generatIOn Case 3 FrEE hAnDs or CoMpLETE PortFolio ManageMent energy markets has partnerships with numerous local and regional distributors in northern europe. Case 2 pArTnErships WiTh inDusTry lower tHe energy ConsuMPtion DOng energy advises companies how to reduce their energy consumption and optimise their energy solutions. usually a climate partnership leads to a 10 percent energy saving, and the company may choose to purchase renewable energy for the gain. an example is the climate partnership with the third most visited european theme park, tivoli. the goal is for us to help tivoli reduce their energy consumption by at least 10 percent, and since the end of 2009 tivoli has reserved its electricity from one of Denmark’s largest wind turbines that DOng energy has built near copenhagen. 28
<a10:updated>2011-02-10T22:31:41+01:00</a10:updated>

DONG ENERGY Page 29

explOratIOn & prODuctIOn generatIOn Case 3 ThE WorLD’s FirsT sWAn ECo-LAbELLED Fuel For Cars and Buses through our partnership with swedish gothenburg energy, dong energy owns 50 percent of the swedish company Fordonsgas. in western sweden the company operates and builds gas stations with Fordonsgas fuel for cars and buses. Fordonsgas is a mixture of Co2 neutral biogas, derived from organic material, and natural gas. Fordonsgas consists of at least 50 percent biogas and therefore less Co2 per km is emitted compared to petrol. as the first fuel in the world, Fordonsgas has thus received the nordic swan eco-label. energy markets sALEs & DisTribuTion 29
<a10:updated>2011-02-10T22:31:41+01:00</a10:updated>

DONG ENERGY Page 30

Dong Energy has a long-term vision: to provide reliable energy without Co2. this is the goal we are headed for and are working towards every day through new investments and ongoing adjustments.
