Green Technology No. 4 · October 2009 Cost-effective generation of steam in port As part of Aalborg Industries’ focus on environmentally friendly, cost saving and high efficient products we are proud to introduce the electrically operated steam generator type VESTA™ EH-S. Connected to the auxiliary steam boiler, the VESTA™ EH-S heater is an alternative to conversion of boilers for MGO operation for certain ship types. The newly introduced MEPC 58 regulation limiting the sulphur for Marine Diesel Oil to max 0.1% has been further tightened by the EEC and EU Directive 1999/32/EC for the SECA area and will become effective as of January 2010. California has introduced a similar regulation (CARB Regulations) which has become effective 1 July 2009. This situation necessitates reconsidering how to generate steam in the most cost-efficient way during port stay. The required steam is generated by powering the electrical heater type VESTA™ EH-S from the auxiliary generator which now is operating at normal load as when at sea, hence less fuel consumption to generate each kW. The heater is an alternative to conversion of the auxiliary boiler for MGO firing in port. n An investment having a pay back period of less than one year. n For ease of installation, the VESTA™ EH-S heater is designed as a complete module including control panel, circulation pump and valves. n The VESTA™ EH-S heater complies with European standards and is designed for easy approval by the classification societies. n The VESTA™ EH-S heat exchanger has a capacity of up to 500 kW equivalent to approximately 700 kg/h of steam output. n The VESTA™ EH-S heater is connected to the boiler circuit of the auxiliary boiler and heats the feed water to a temperature higher than steam saturation which turns into saturated steam when entering the steam drum of the auxiliary boiler.
