2 To the reader THE SUSTAINABILITY ASPECTS OF THE PROJECTS In order to highlight the positive aspects of our consulting operations, we have chosen to describe the projects based on one or more of the nine primary indicators presented below. We have grouped the indicators based on the three sustainability dimensions that characterise ÅF’s work – social, environmental and economic. The indicators reflect the seventeen goals that the UN has embodied in its Global Sustainable Development Goals. The purpose of these global goals is to within fifteen years eradicate extreme poverty, reduce inequalities and inequities and solve climate change. SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMIC Good health and well-being The project supports the development of technology for achieving the best possible sanitation, hygiene and health-promoting initiatives. One explicit objective of the global goals is to eradicate contagious, water-borne diseases by 2030. Sustainable energy for all The project promotes access to clean and renewable energy – a basic prerequisite for meeting challenges such as poverty, climate change and growth. Today, fossilbased energy comprises almost 80 percent of the global energy supply. Sustainable industry, innovations and infrastructure The project promotes sustainable infrastructure and businesses. Growing populations in the major cities of the world place demands on sustainable industries, energy services and transport systems. Quality education for all The project promotes quality education, a basic human right. According to the UN goal, quality education shall encompass qualified teachers and a syllabus that promotes participation in working life and civil society. Combat climate change The project supports work to combat climate change. A large share of greenhouse gas emissions are caused by fossilbased energy. Reduced global warming is a prerequisite for reducing poverty and securing social conditions. Sustainable production and consumption The project supports sustainable consumption and production of goods and services. Reducing impact on the environment, requires a circular approach to consumable goods. Sustainable cities and communities The project promotes a sustainable transition within global urbanisation. Sustainable urban development encompasses everything from construction and planning to well-functioning collaboration between all of society’s stakeholders. Ecosystems and biodiversity The project promotes biodiversity. A special focus of the UN goals is to protect forests and water catchments in accordance with international agreements. Sustainable biodiversity is essential to securing continued sustainable industry and growth. Implementation and global partnership The project works in accordance with a multi-stakeholder approach wherein governments, the private sector and civil society collaborate. This goal includes the transfer of modern technology to developing countries on favourable terms.
